Privacy Policy

Important: Data Visibility
Nudge is a dating app designed around accountability and transparency. By design, most of your profile information is visible to other users. You should assume that nearly all data you provide (name, photos, bio, preferences, availability, reliability tier) is visible to other Nudge users.
We apply extra protection to:
- Your date of birth (used for age calculation and preferences matching)
- Your phone number (shared only after mutual agreement following a successful date)
- Your precise location coordinates (used for matching and venue features, not shared directly)
- Your email address (used for authentication only)
Note: Some of this information may already exist in public records or prior data breaches.
1. Information We Collect
Account Information:
- Name, email address, date of birth
- Phone number (optional, for post-date exchange)
- Authentication data (magic link tokens, Apple ID)
Profile Information:
- Photos (headshot and full body)
- Bio, height, job title, education
- Gender and dating preferences
- Weekly availability schedule
Location Data:
- Approximate location (for matching users in your area)
- Precise location (for venue check-in verification)
- Venue presence ("In the Wild" feature, when enabled)
- Trusted venue geofences (background location, with your permission)
Activity Data:
- Likes, passes, and matches
- Messages exchanged with matches
- Post-date feedback you provide about others
- Reports you submit about other users
- "In the Wild" sessions and approach requests
Device Information:
- Device tokens for push notifications
- Device type and operating system version
Verification Data:
- LinkedIn profile URL (optional)
- ID verification status (when implemented)
2. How We Use Your Information
Core Service:
- Match you with compatible users based on preferences and location
- Facilitate communication between matched users
- Schedule and coordinate dates at verified venues
- Enable phone number exchange after successful dates
Safety & Accountability:
- Calculate and display your reliability tier based on date feedback
- Investigate reports and enforce community standards
- Verify venue check-ins for scheduled dates
- Retain data as needed to respond to safety concerns
"In the Wild" Feature:
- Show your presence at venues to other users (when you enable this)
- Facilitate approach requests between users at the same venue
Communications:
- Send push notifications about matches, messages, and dates
- Send transactional emails (magic links, important updates)
- Notify you of policy changes
3. Information Sharing
With Other Users:
- Your profile information (name, photos, bio, preferences) is visible to other users
- Your reliability tier is always visible and cannot be hidden
- Post-date feedback is shared with the person you rated (punctuality, photo accuracy, respectfulness)
- Your venue presence is visible when using "In the Wild"
- Phone numbers are shared only after both parties agree following a successful date
With Service Providers:
- Supabase (database hosting and authentication) - USA
- Apple (push notifications, Sign in with Apple)
- Future: Identity verification provider (when implemented)
For Legal Reasons:
- We cooperate with law enforcement and respond to valid legal process (subpoenas, court orders, warrants)
- We may disclose data when we believe in good faith it's necessary to prevent harm, investigate violations, or protect our rights
We Do Not:
- Sell your personal information to third parties
- Share your data with advertisers
- Use your data for purposes unrelated to the service
4. Data Storage & Security
Where We Store Data:
- All data is processed and stored in the United States
- We use Supabase for database hosting and authentication
Security Measures:
- Passwordless authentication (magic links, Apple Sign In) - no passwords to steal
- Encryption of data in transit (TLS/SSL)
- Row-level security policies restricting data access
- Limited access to sensitive information (phone numbers, precise location)
Limitations:
- No system is perfectly secure
- We cannot guarantee absolute security
- If a breach occurs, we will notify affected users promptly
5. Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Access: Request a copy of your personal data
- Correction: Update inaccurate information via your profile settings
- Deletion: Delete your account and associated data through the app
- Data Export: Request an export of your data

When you delete your account:
- Your profile is removed from other users' view
- Your messages are removed from your matches' conversations
- We may retain certain data for safety investigations or legal compliance (see Data Retention)
6. Data Retention
Active Accounts:
- We retain your data for as long as your account is active
After Account Deletion:
- Profile data is deleted within 30 days
- Messages are removed from other users' view immediately
- Backup copies may persist for up to 90 days
- We may retain data longer if needed to:
- Investigate safety concerns or policy violations
- Respond to legal requests
- Resolve disputes
Inactive Accounts:
- We may delete accounts that have been inactive for extended periods after providing notice
7. Reliability Tier & Feedback
How It Works:
- After dates, both users provide feedback on punctuality, photo accuracy, and respectfulness
- This feedback is shared with the person being rated
- Your reliability tier (new, medium, high) is calculated from your feedback history
- Your reliability tier is always visible to other users
Why We Do This:
- To encourage accountability and honest behavior
- To help users make informed decisions about potential matches
- To build a trustworthy dating community
8. "In the Wild" Feature
When you enable "In the Wild":
- Your presence at a venue is visible to other Nudge users at or near that venue
- Your traffic light status (green/yellow/red) indicates your openness to approaches
- Other users can send you approach requests
- You can see other users who are also "In the Wild" at the venue
This feature requires:
- Separate consent before first use
- "High" reliability tier
- Location permission (may include background location for venue geofences)
You can end your session at any time, which immediately removes your venue presence.
9. Location Data
We use location data for:
- Matching: Finding users in your geographic area (approximate location)
- Venue Check-in: Verifying you arrived at scheduled date locations (precise location)
- "In the Wild": Showing your presence at venues (precise location, when enabled)
- Trusted Venues: Automatic check-in at your saved venues (background location, optional)
Location Permissions:
- "When In Use": Required for basic matching and manual check-in
- "Always": Optional, enables automatic venue detection and geofencing
We do not:
- Share your precise coordinates with other users
- Track your location history when you're not using location features
- Sell location data to third parties
10. California Residents
If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA):
- Right to Know: You can request what personal information we collect, use, and disclose
- Right to Delete: You can request deletion of your personal information
- Right to Opt-Out of Sale: We do not sell your personal information
- Right to Non-Discrimination: We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights

11. Children's Privacy
Nudge is not intended for users under 18 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 18.
If we learn we have collected information from a child under 18, we will delete it promptly. If you believe we have information from a child under 18, please contact us.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. When we make material changes:
- We will notify you through the app or by email
- We will update the "Last updated" date at the top
- We will provide a summary of key changes
Your continued use of Nudge after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy. If you disagree with changes, you may delete your account.
